STOP EVERYTHING: Pleas- Moses Sumney

Moses Sumney is a fascinating individual; on one hand he’s blessed with a clearly extraordinary talent, producing consistently stellar cuts of music that defy categorization. He bumps shoulders with the creme de la creme of the indie world and counts creative luminaries such as Solange (check out their incredible rendition of Young, Gifted and Black here) and Lianne La Havas among his best friends. Yet his Twitter feed is filled with stories and statements that are relatable to your average, run-of-the-mill 25 year old; a lack of funds, a disappointing love life, Ubers that take an eternity. It’s an interesting juxtaposition and one that makes you root for Sumney further- he’s surprisingly grounded for someone who’s scheduled to play the Hollywood Bowl with Erykah Badu and St Vincent this Sunday. Don’t be fooled by his self-effacement though- latest drop Pleas soon reminds you of why he’s destined for soaring success. Layered arpeggios float alongside trembling, tilting vocals, delicate as spun sugar. Sumney possess a instantly identifiable voice that lends gravity to anything he sings and the result is a re-imagining of what modern folk can be. Stunning.

FRESH NEW KICKS: Livewire- Oh Wonder

Remember The Civil Wars? A folk duo hailing from the deep American south, possessing undeniable chemistry that seeped into the bones of every track they released. Their harmonies felt like whispered promises; the were more than just a talented pair of singers who happened to duet. If we were getting really sentimental, we’d The Civil Wars made music that sounded like it came from one soul. And so it is with London duo Oh Wonder, a name you’ll probably recall from their previous 8 excellent tracks, all released monthly in what must be the best promo campaign we’ve seen since Hovis did that ad with the lad escorting a loaf of bread through history.

May Day sees the release of Livewire, a beautifully crafted piano driven song. Anthony and Josephine drip delicate spun sugar melodies over blossoming production that practically begs to be digested during a summer sunset, while sat beside a bewitching, unreadable human, all cheekbones and desire. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Oh Wonder is their consistent ability to improve upon their previous work: they set their own bars and then insist on leaping over them. June can’t come fast enough.
